About Air Force One

The history of Air Force One, the call sign for any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the President, began in the mid-20th century as air travel became a practical means of presidential transport. The term was officially coined in 1953 after an incident where President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s plane, a Lockheed Constellation dubbed Columbine II, nearly collided with a commercial flight sharing the same call sign, “Air Force 8610.” To avoid future confusion, the unique designation “Air Force One” was established. Early presidential aircraft included propeller-driven planes like the Douglas DC-4 and DC-6, used by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, but Eisenhower’s Columbine II and Columbine III marked the transition to a dedicated, customized fleet reflecting the growing demands of global leadership.

The jet age transformed Air Force One with the introduction of the Boeing VC-137C, a modified 707, which entered service under President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Known by its tail number 26000, this aircraft became iconic, featuring a distinctive blue-and-white livery designed by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and industrial designer Raymond Loewy. It carried Kennedy’s body back from Dallas after his assassination in 1963 and served presidents through Richard Nixon’s era, including historic trips like Nixon’s 1972 visit to China. A second VC-137C (tail number 27000) joined the fleet in 1972, overlapping with its predecessor until both were phased out in the 1990s. These jets symbolized American power and prestige, equipped with advanced communications and defensive systems for their time.

The modern era of Air Force One began in 1990 with the delivery of two Boeing VC-25A aircraft, heavily modified 747-200Bs, tail numbers 28000 and 29000. First flown by President George H.W. Bush, these planes remain in service as of 2025, operated by the 89th Airlift Wing at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Capable of midair refueling, they offer a range exceeding 7,800 miles and include secure communications, a medical suite, and protection against electromagnetic pulses. Memorable moments include President George W. Bush’s flights after the 9/11 attacks, kept aloft for security, and President Barack Obama’s global diplomacy missions. Each VC-25A costs about $200,000 per flight hour, reflecting their complexity and constant readiness.

Looking ahead, the VC-25As are slated for replacement by the VC-25B, based on the Boeing 747-8i, with deliveries expected in the late 2020s after delays and cost overruns trimmed the program from $4 billion to a still-hefty $3.9 billion for two aircraft. The current fleet has logged decades of service, with upgrades maintaining their relevance, but wear and technological advancements necessitate the transition. Beyond hardware, Air Force One embodies a legacy of presidential mobility and national identity, from Eisenhower’s Cold War voyages to modern leaders crisscrossing the globe. As of 2025, the VC-25As continue their duties, ferrying the President—most recently on domestic and international trips—while the next chapter of this airborne institution looms on the horizon.
